Film making in 2014, exploring how to get your foot in the door

I am a 23 year old student at FSU, with a practical career path as a research psychologist laid out in front of me; it is a logical plan that leads to a good paying career that would even (hopefully) improve our world in some way. What do I want to do with this degree? Go to Film school. Let me back track. I am double majoring in English as well because of my love of writing and literature (I also love the humanities and philosophy but I can't afford to make nothing). My dream is to take what I have learned from psychology and creative writing and apply that knowledge to creating realistic characters that are relatable in an entirely new way. They are not relatable because they are marketed to appeal to a mass audience. They tell a true story about humanity. They reach the inner depth (good and bad) of what it means to be human in this vast universe. I want to write and direct films that pay homage to the classics. I want them to play out like a novel or play on screen. This is what fuels me, my love of humanity and my need to translate that on screen and reach someone. Should I go to grad school for clinical or cognitive psych? Yes, yes I should. Will I? I hope not. I hope I follow my dreams (cliche for a writer but true all the same). This blog will help me discover the world of independent film and all the tools that are available for independent film makers in such a digital era. The landscape of film is changing because of the ability to come together digitally. Through kickstarter, indego and even sites like reddit, we are able to start projects as a population and chose what we want. We are able to find other people with the same aspirations and work together in different platforms to let our stories and our voices be heard. I will be researching these platforms and hopefully making connections along the way. We live in an era where there is no excuse not to try. We can communicate so effectively and quickly, learn about our trade with the click of a button. I want to take advantage of the spoils of living in 2014. Let's make a movie.
